Too Much T.V & Not Enough Homework

1 of Gary Loves many 20+ pound Northern Pike

Over the years we have had all sorts of people telling us how to catch big fish, some of those T.V personalities, oh yeah, some of them real screamers acting like they never caught a fish before. Just turn on WFN and you will see the posers, heck one guy had a fellow angler walk out into the Lilly pads to unhook his lure after he got the crap kicked out of him fighting a Carp. Oh yeah you read that right a carp, it was ridiculous and insulted my intelligence. Too many promising fishermen this includes kids are being mislead by this garbage on T.V. I hear it all the time when teaching the Jackfish Lures Fishing Ed Program.

Only a few and I mean a very few know what they are talking about. Al Lindner formerly of In-Fisherman is probably the best fisherman ever to hit the T.V set Me personally I have watched Al for years since I was a kid. Roland Martin, Shaw Grigsby, and Hank Parker can't leave out Bill Dance, and one of my personal favorites Babe Winkleman. These men know the sport inside and out. They are great because they do their homework and study the fish they target, this is what I was taught when I was a kid. My dad and Grandfather always spent time looking at a lake and what was in it before we left the house. Al Lindner has caught some giant Pike over the years and done it because they study the diets of the fish they are after, and do research on the lakes they fish.

I take the same approach with Jackfish Lures and incorporate the findings into the Lures we produce. And let me tell you we have caught some big fish. In the photo below my Wife Laura caught a big Pike on a spinnerbait.
Study the diets of the fish you are after, and be lake specific about it, because lakes are different and have different forage available to the species that live there. One of my favorite web sites has to be the Anglers Atlas http://www.anglersatlas.com/ the maps they have are loaded with information and basic depth structures of the lakes, including the species of fish in the lake sport and not sport. Use your fish finder to key in on specific structure points important to your favorite species, if you have GPS mark the spot and go back and see how it performs all season. It might not be good in spring but great in summer or fall, also keep a journal with you note the temp of the air and water if possible. Note the color of the leaves on the trees are they yellow or still green or the leaves have not shown up yet. Try and keep your season noted as much in detail as possible. Big fish the Biggest of the big have patterns they follow, by keeping track of your seasonal changes you will figure out that pattern and get into them. The absolute best way to learn how to get those big fish is to just step up and do your homework and go out and learn and enjoy. Find out what works for you on your lake, I know we have the lure to help you reel in the Big fish.

Here at Jackfish Lures we have spent years working on the lures we produce and they produce amazing results when combined with good homework.
